Requirements
Supported SYSC v0.1.3 install route, terminal size, session and network needs.
Before you install
SYSC v0.1.3 installs the desktop suite on an Arch-family x86_64 system. It targets Niri and systemd user services. The installer refuses root and non-Arch-family distributions.
SYSC's release workflow also publishes an arm64 installer, but the v0.1.3 component pin has amd64 assets only. That binary does not provide a complete arm64 suite. SYSC has not published a qualification matrix for every Arch derivative, machine or desktop configuration. See compatibility.
Other distributions
The complete suite supports Arch-family x86_64 systems. Full Debian and Fedora support is planned; the existing gSlapper package routes cover that wallpaper tool alone.
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| AUR packages | Published. Start with sysc-shell; your helper installs its dependencies. |
| Debian / Ubuntu | Full suite support planned. Only the gSlapper package route exists today. |
| Fedora | Full suite support planned. Only the gSlapper package route exists today. |
| Other distributions and architectures | Not supported. The installer refuses to run. |
Prepare the session
- Configure Niri and make sure the Niri config exists. By default that is ~/.config/niri/config.kdl; an absolute XDG_CONFIG_HOME moves it.
- Use a terminal at least 80 columns wide and 24 rows high.
- Have internet access for the installer and component downloads.
- Start Niri with niri-session when you want systemd to start the user services in the current login.
- Install yay or paru if you want SYSC to try its Arch package route for gSlapper. SYSC continues if that optional package step is skipped.
The installer can run from SSH or a TTY without a Wayland session. It enables the suite's user units but cannot start them there. Log in through the Niri session afterward; see session startup.
Weather and location
The installer seeds the shell's weather widget and always needs a location. With --yes it uses an automatic lookup unless you pass coordinates.
Automatic location lookup sends a request to ipapi.co to estimate coordinates from the network address. Searching a city sends the city name to Open-Meteo's geocoding API. Supplying both latitude and longitude avoids those location lookups. The shell stores the selected coordinates and location label in its config and uses the coordinates for weather requests.
For the request endpoints, see the SYSC location lookup source and the sysc-shell v0.2.0 README.
Other components
SYSC installs the releases listed in the suite reference. A greeter is a separate system-level project. Libraries and standalone components can have different operating-system and runtime requirements from the SYSC installer.
